Macedonian participation at the 71st edition of the Cannes Film Festival

The Macedonian Film Agency is very pleased to inform you about the Macedonian participation at the 71st edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

Minority Macedonian film in the Official Program, four new achievements on the film market, announcement in the “Hollywood Reporter”, promotion of potential shooting locations, signing agreements for cooperation with neighboring film centers.

With one film in the official competitive program and four latest achievements to be shown on the film market, as well as with several significant promotional activities, the Macedonian cinematography will be part of the 71st edition of the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, the beginning of which was held on Monday, the 8th of May, with the ceremonial ceremony.

The eyes of the world film elite in the next ten days will be directed to the French capital of the film, and this year Film Agency prepared a worthy redesigned presentation with many important activities, which would be a serious chance for promotion of domestic cinematography and will open the doors of the Macedonian filmmakers for a breakthrough in the European and world market.

For the ninth time Macedonia will participate at the film market in Cannes with its own promotional stand within the South East Europe Pavilion - SEE Pavilion no. 135 (along with seven other countries in the region - Serbia, Montenegro, Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Cyprus).

The film "The Wild Pear Tree" directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan (co-production between Turkey, France, Germany, Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria and Sweden) will be screened at the Official Competitive Selection. The festival projection is scheduled for the 18th of May at 18:00 in the Grand Thatre Lumiere hall, and screenings organized for journalists will be held at the Debussy Hall at 18:30 (press) and at the Bazin Hall starting at 18:45 (press).

The two latest Macedonian films will be screened at the film market: "Happiness Effect" directed by Borjan Zafirovski (screening on May 14th at 9:30 in PALAIS B) and "Grandfather and Grandson" directed by Ilija Piperkovski (projection on May 14th at 12:00 at PALAIS C)

In addition to the feature films, short films will also participate in the SHORT FILM CORNER at the film market: "Edna" directed by Vuk Mitevski and “Gottlieb” directed by Krste Gospodinovski.

The film is the strongest cultural medium, and we believe that its visibility at the most important film events in the world should be maximally used for a worthy presentation. In the past period we have been actively working to prepare a modern and attractive promotion of the Macedonian film in Cannes. The selection of a film with Macedonian minority participation in the main competition is a great success, but the other projections of the film market are no less significant. The future of small cinematographies is in co-production projects, and among the strong competition in the world we can only parry with a well-organized promotion, which we especially worked for this year and introduced a lot of novelties.

The Macedonian Film Agency purchased an advertising space in the Hollywood Reporter, which will advertise  a post that would promote Macedonia as a destination for filming in its daily editions on the 9th of May.

In order to promote and improve the activities for promotion of Macedonia as a destination for filming, the Film Agency also prepared a special website for which special promotional slides were made including photographs of the most attractive locations for shooting. This site is opened shortly before the start of the festival.

Apart from the advertisement and the promotion of the new website and the locations in Macedonia, the Macedonian Film Agency also purchased advertising space in the Hollywood Reporter to be published on May 11th to congratulate the entire crew of the "The Wild Pear Tree" for the success it has achieved and being a part of the official competition of the festival.

During the festival, it is projected that the Macedonian Film Agency will sign an agreement for mutual cooperation in the field of co-production with the Kosovo Film Center, while on the basis of previous agreements with the Bulgarian Film Center, a text was also prepared for signing an agreement for mutual cooperation with Bulgaria for achievement of co-productions. The agreement by the two institutions will be finally defined, and in the past period, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Macedonia has begun a verification procedure.

A short trailer was prepared for all the films that are not the festival and are supported by the MFA.

The Film Agency worked hard to provide meetings of potential co-producers of projects already approved by MFA, as well as to enable the presence of several producers from Macedonia who have active film projects on the co-production event Roma Lazio Film Commision, where they will have a chance to realize meetings with other producers participating in the event in order to achieve cooperation.

As promotional material for the market, catalogs are prepared with data on Macedonian films in development, films that are already finished, but also films that are in a certain stage of realization and accompanying promotional material that will be part of the promotional stand at the film market.
